We help them become mentors, coaches or companions to people in need, or contribute their job skills and expertise to community projects and organizations. Volunteers receive guidance and training so they can make a contribution that suits their talents, interests, and availability. RSVP is one of the largest volunteer networks in the nation for people 55 and over. A more satisfying approach may be 'parallel play.'</p><p>Try watching two children in a sandbox—a boy playing with toy trucks and a girl using a pail and shovel to build sand castles. It's a phenomenon called parallel play—two individuals engrossed in separate but parallel activities. And it might hold the key to happiness in later life. Eight years ago, I wrote a book about the challenges that partners can expect to face when planning for and living together during retirement. In the time since, I have seen thousands of couples in connection with speeches, seminars, therapy sessions and email/mail/phone encounters. One issue has become abundantly clear: Individuals who do almost everything together in later life—who are "joined at the hip"—usually aren't as satisfied or fulfilled as couples where spouses have their own interests and, ideally, are learning new skills.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="https://30-year-vacation-8.lndo.site/tags/working-retirement" hreflang="en">Working in retirement</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="https://30-year-vacation-8.lndo.site/tags/volunteering" hreflang="en">Volunteering</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="https://30-year-vacation-8.lndo.site/tags/issues-couples" hreflang="en">Issues for couples</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-link field--type-link field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424127887324879504578601912107485252">Read more</a></div> Sun, 08 Sep 2013 05:00:00 +0000 Karen Stevenson 179 at https://30-year-vacation-8.lndo.site Volunteer Match https://30-year-vacation-8.lndo.site/links/volunteer-match <span>Volunteer Match</span> <span><span>Karen Stevenson</span></span> <span>Sat, 08/03/2013 - 3:12 pm</span> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Find a cause that lights you up. Volunteers are more likely than non-volunteers to socialize and they do so more frequently. Most tell us that they have developed new friendships as a result of volunteering.</p> There are many paths to good health, but regardless of which we take, volunteering can help us. We now know people who volunteer feel better—physically, mentally and emotionally better. And our volunteers tell us that they are convinced their health is better because of the things they do when they volunteer. People who volunteer manage their stress better and feel a stronger connection to their communities. In all of the pathways we take to good health, being a volunteer can help to make a meaningful difference.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="https://30-year-vacation-8.lndo.site/tags/volunteering" hreflang="en">Volunteering</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-link field--type-link field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="http://www.unitedhealthgroup.com/Newsroom/Articles/Feed/UnitedHealth%20Group/2013/0619StudyHealthVolunteering.aspx">Read more</a></div> Sun, 21 Jul 2013 13:12:26 +0000 Karen Stevenson 94 at https://30-year-vacation-8.lndo.site Life Reimagined https://30-year-vacation-8.lndo.site/links/life-reimagined <span>Life Reimagined</span> <span><span>Karen Stevenson</span></span> <span>Sun, 07/14/2013 - 9:13 am</span> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Change is a part of life. I thought that was such an odd way to put it. But after talking to others that have been retired a while it seems to be a recurring theme. There is a lot of time to fill and many people seem to be having trouble keeping busy.</p><p>I read an interesting blog post about time management in retirement on <a href="http://satisfyingretirement.blogspot.com/2013/07/my-first-few-years-of-retirement-time.html">Satisfying Retirement Blogspot</a>. The crux of it is the need to figure out what to do with all the extra time that is available in retirement. </p><p><span>I wonder if one problem is that when we retire we also lose the goals that keep us moving. Maybe that's evidence that we need to actively work to substitute new goals in retirement. </span></p><p><span>We could be helping schools, volunteering for community organizations, getting involved in local government, and a million other things. There is so much that needs to be done, and an army of retirees who finally have time to do things might be just the ticket to making amazing things happen.</span></p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="https://30-year-vacation-8.lndo.site/tags/volunteering" hreflang="en">Volunteering</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="https://30-year-vacation-8.lndo.site/tags/making-difference" hreflang="en">Making a difference</a></div> </div> Sun, 14 Jul 2013 13:12:27 +0000 Karen Stevenson 79 at https://30-year-vacation-8.lndo.site Encore.org https://30-year-vacation-8.lndo.site/links/encoreorg <span>Encore.org</span> <span><span>Karen Stevenson</span></span> <span>Sun, 07/07/2013 - 8:37 am</span> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Millions are already in the midst of inventing a new stage of life and work – the encore years – between the end of midlife and anything resembling old-fashioned retirement.
